ADVENT

The voice heard at Advent is the voice that calls out, ‘Get ready! Get up!’ This is the beginning of the new year according to the Church calendar. Likewise let it also be a time when we do something new in our spiritual lives. Let us throw away our former sins as the proverb says, ‘the old net is cast aside,’ and take up something new, the new fishing net, ‘the old net is cast aside, the new net goes fishing.’[cf Nga Pepeha 1100] Abandon the old net and take hold of the new.

NEWS OF THE WAR

BULGARIA

The world’s eyes are now fixed on this power and on what side it will take. During the past few months it has been like a man sitting on the fence thinking about which side he will come down on. But during these days it has become increasingly obvious that it is thinking of fighting on the side of the Germans. It has not been able to decide how and with what strength Germany would come to its aid. Germany’s behaviour towards it has been like its behaviour towards Turkey which drew Turkey into this war.

NEWS OF THE WAR.

The news we have received of the fighting between Russian and Germany and Austria is very encouraging. From August up to the present Russia has taken 40,000 German and Austrian prisoners. The strength of Germany is decreasing and that of Russia growing. Germany is considering what it should do after this because it is becoming weaker. There are two things it can do now: first, it can dig trenches to live in through the winter and when winter is past it can resume its intense offensives; secondly, another thing it can do is retreat to the West. There are these two options but both are difficult.

THE MAORI CONTINGENT.

On 27th of this month news came of the participation of the Maori Contingent in a major offensive in the Dardanelles; the offensive took place at night. The companions of the Maori Contingent in this attack were the New Zealand troops and those of Australia. One’s head was filled with horror at the stories of this great attack; and the absence of this thing, fear, was seen amongst the Maori. General Ian Hamilton was amazed at the bravery of the Maori Contingent and the New Zealand Government has received his message of praise for the Maori soldiers.

THE HOLY BIBLE (VI).

When you have obtained a Bible keep in mind the reason why this treasure was given to you. In it St Paul says that it is ‘the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation’ (Ephesians 1.13). According to St Peter it is the means whereby a person is born anew as a child of God (1 Peter 1.23). According to the Apostle James ‘it has power to save our souls’ (James 1.21). Here also are the stories given by God for people to believe, about the love of God who sent his Son to give eternal life to all who believe in him.

THE HOLY BIBLE (V)

There is an occupation which is providing much treasure for those in Hauraki who are working at it; it is hard work involving going down into the depths of the earth. If the ore is found it is brought up and pounded into small pieces, into dust, then the man finds his treasure. Such is the man’s craving that he gives no thought to the hard work that is involved in getting it.

HUI OF THE MAORI CHURCH OF THE WAIAPU DISTRICT
Held at Whangara on 15th February, 1915.

The Bishop’s Address.
My brothers, ministers and representatives of the people, I am gratified that we are meeting together at this hui. It is my wish and my prayer that our hui will produce much fruit. It will be good to discuss the contents of the motions. It will also be good to stimulate the ministers and the people in the work. That will be the fruit of our meeting together in humility and love.
